March 2016 Michigan BCB logs

New stations heard from West Michigan during March, 2016 (with the exception of 1548 4QD). Antenna used is noted in the log. All dates and times UTC:

TAs:

1431 Radio Sawa, Djibouti – 3/5/2016 0049-0053 UTC – Decent carrier noted several times here in past nights finally culminating with some audio on March 5th. Occasional strong peaks bursting into pop music lasting for several minutes. Parallel to a remote Perseus SDR located in the Mediterranean region that had a strong copy on Radio Sawa which provided a nice real-time comparison. 7,481 miles from my North D-KAZ antenna.

1548.01 4QD Emerald, QLD, Australia – 3/24/2016 1134 UTC – Carrier peaking to legible audio at 1134 UTC with aussie accented talk during long signal peaks but clobbered by heavy slop from 1540. Best on North D-KAZ antenna, just like last year in March at this time when 4QD was received surprisingly clear. 9,081 miles!

Domestics:

810 WCTA Alamo, TN. – 3/5/2016 0159 UTC – Poor copy under WSYW with legal ID at TOH, heard on southwest BOGs.

1230 WMLR Hohenwald, TN. – 3/7/2016 0158 UTC – With oldies and TOH legal ID under local WTKG during au cx on South D-KAZ.

1230 KGHS International Falls, MN. – 3/27/2016 0000 UTC – OM call letter ID given along with mention of International Falls (MN), poor but distinguishable after a few playbacks of the recording, North D-KAZ.

1240 WJON St. Cloud, MN. – 3/26/2016 1159 UTC – OM legal call letter ID and into several mentions of St. Cloud and soon buried again, on North D-KAZ.

1270 WWWI Baxter, MN. – 3/6/2016 0000 UTC – With TOH ID: “This is NBC Red Zone Sports Radio, on WWWI, AM 12-70, Brainerd-Baxter”, dominant on North D-KAZ.

1300 KPMI Bemidji, MN. – 3/24/2016 1150 UTC – Under semi-local WOOD with spot for Imus in the Morning and then call letter ID, on North D-KAZ.

1350 WCMP Pine City, MN. – 3/6/2016 0000 UTC – 60 Hz buzz noted for a few seconds at TOH and then under modulated legal ID, difficult to understand and then into standards with better modulation, on North D-KAZ.

1360 KKBJ Bemidji, MN. – 3/26/2016 1156 UTC – With local Bemidji (MN) ads and local weather, briefly dominant, legal call letter ID at TOH, on North D-KAZ.

1390 KXSS Waite Park, MN. – 3/6/2016 0001 UTC – With Westwood One NCAA basketball and pause for legal ID, mixing with WGRB, on North D-KAZ.

1470 WBKV West Bend, WI. – 3/13/2016 2353 UTC – With slogan “In this fast paced world we live in, it’s better to stay in touch right here, AM 14-70, WBKV”, on North D-KAZ.

1480 KKCQ Fosston, MN. – 3/14/2016 0000 UTC – Very poor under WLMV with OM TOH legal ID, on North D-KAZ.

February 2016 Michigan D-KAZ logs

23 new stations added to the logbook in February! Here’s the rundown
with a few reception videos thrown in. All heard from West Michigan
using the Perseus SDR and reversible North/South D-KAZ antenna.
Times/dates are UTC, all logs are new except where noted. Total MW
stations now logged since Jan 2009: 1,845.

DOMESTIC:

540 WDAK Columbus, GA. – 2/13/2016 1300 UTC – Briefly over a few
seconds of WKFN dead-air with legal TOH ID and slogan “Newsradio 5-40,
Columbus” and then lost again to WKFN, on South D-KAZ.

550 WDUN Gainesville, GA. – 2/13/2016 1300 UTC – With local ad leading
up to legal TOH ID and this slogan “North Georgia’s Newstalk”,
dominant and knocking out WKRC on South D-KAZ.

550 WSVA Harrisonburg, VA. – 2/13/2016 1200 UTC – Under dominant WKRC
& KTRS with legal TOH ID and mention of FM 92.1, poor copy, on South
D-KAZ.

740 WHMT Tullahoma, TN. – 2/21/2016 0302 UTC – With call letter ID and
city and then into CBS Sports Radio, au cx on South D-KAZ while mixing
with more dominants unid Grupo Formula (Mexico) and Radio Sandino
(Nicaragua), 740 #25.

860 WSON Henderson, KY. – 2/7/2016 1300 UTC – Tentative with poor copy
under WMRI and local 850 splash, rapid call letter ID and partial
calls for FM translator W243CU 96.5, on South D-KAZ.

880 WMDB Nashville, TN. – 2/7/2016 1300 UTC. – With Spanish talk under
WRFD and Spanish accented English legal calls and city given at TOH &
slogan “La Ranchera 880”, on South D-KAZ.

1000 WYBT Blountstown, FL. – 2/14/2016 0415 UTC – Daytimer with
Genesis song “Misunderstanding” and other oldies along with a call
letter ID heard fair under WMVP, on South D-KAZ.

1270 KFAN Rochester, MN – 2/28/2016 2300 UTC – With legal TOH ID and
into FOX Sports Radio, faint on North D-KAZ.

1340 WLDY Ladysmith, WI. – 2/28/2016 2300 UTC – With legal TOH ID,
poor in the GY mix, mention of NBC Sports, on North D-KAZ.

1370 WLJW Cadillac, MI. – 2/28/2016 2300 UTC – With religious program
and IDing as WLJN during station promo at TOH, under dominant WCCN, on
North D-KAZ.

1440 KKXL Grand Forks, ND. – 2/7/2016 0300 UTC – With State Farm ad
and into TOH OM ID with “The Fan for the Red River Valley is 14-40
AM”, K-K-X-L Grand Forks, on North D-KAZ.

1450 WHRY Hurley, WI. – 2/28/2016 2306 UTC – With oldies mx and
callsign ID along with slogan “The Oldies Station” given at 2306 UTC,
fair, on North D-KAZ.

1490 WSWW Charleston, WV. – 2/17/2016 0357 UTC – Presumed, promoting
or ID’ing as “AM 580 WCHS” as a Cincinnati Reds MLB affiliate and then
lost to the GY noise, during au cx on South D-KAZ.

1540 KEDA San Antonio, TX. – 2/17/2016 0431 UTC – With EE ID with
“Claro Communications” and “FM K272EK 102.3” mention and into Tejano
SS music, dominant during au cx, on South D-KAZ.

1570 WTLK Taylorsville, NC. – 2/17/2016 0400 UTC – TOH ID mentioning
Alexander County (NC) and surrounding counties, call letter ID and
into Southern gospel music under WTRB during au cx on South D-KAZ.

1570 KAKK Walker, MN. – 2/27/2016 0300 UTC – With partial ID
“…greatest hits…and the home of….K-A-K-K, Walker” and then lost
as quickly as it surfaced, on North D-KAZ.

TRANS-ATLANTIC:

1575 Radio Farda Al-Dhabbaya, United Arab Emirates – With Bryan Adam’s
song “Everything I do” and other music with weak but clear audio
parallel to Qatar remote SDR during a nice Middle Eastern opening, on
North D-KAZ, 7,144 miles.

LATIN AMERICAN:

580 WKAQ San Juan, PR. – 2/17/2016 0400 UTC – With multiple call
letter IDs, mentions of Facebook and Twitter, mention of San Juan,
mostly alone during au cx on South D-KAZ.


580 Radio Rebelde, Cuba – 2/17/2016 0301 UTC – Very weak under
graveyard-like rumble of stations during au cx, familiar and distinct
Radio Rebelde sound effects heard, nothing else discernible, on South
D-KAZ.

830 HIJB Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – 2/17/2016 0400 UTC – With
fair signal and clock ticking sound effect and into call letter ID in
Spanish “Ach-eh Ee Hota Beh” during au cx, on South D-KAZ, relog.

1030 LS10 Radio del Plata Buenos Aires, Argentina – 2/17/2016 0400 UTC
– Presumed with 5 distinct short time pips at TOH followed by a final
sixth longer pip that is very unique to Radio del Plata, during au cx
on South D-KAZ under WBZ.

1080 Radio Cadena, Cuba – 2/17/2016 0400 UTC – Dominant during au cx
with ID at TOH, South D-KAZ.

1100 HJAT Barranquilla, Colombia – 2/17/2016 0250 UTC – Parallel to
web and fair under WTAM with Santa Fe vs Cerro Porteño fútbol match,
ads and jingles thrown in between plays, au cx on South D-KAZ.

1550 Radio Rebelde, Cuba – 2/17/2016 0401 UTC – Weak and
unintelligible but with familiar sound effects unique to Radio Rebelde
during au cx on South D-KAZ.

January 2016 Michigan D-KAZ logs

New stuff heard in January from West Michigan using the North-South reversible D-KAZ & Perseus SDR. Not a bad start to the new year!

Domestics:

560 WMIK Middlesboro, KY. – 1200 UTC 1/23/2016 – Southern accented OM ID and city with Southern gospel music under WIND.

600 WBOB Jacksonville, FL. – 0508 UTC 10/1/2016 – With scheduled DX test on day power/pattern, fast and slow morse code IDs, sweep tones, call sign IDs, etc. Very strong at times.

810 WWOS St. George, SC. – 1200 UTC 1/23/2016 – Strong signal with religious choral music and YL announcement: “For Christ honoring music and programming for the entire family, this is WWOS FM 91.9 and WWOS AM 810 St. George…” and into USA Radio News at 1201 UTC.

980 WULR York, SC. – 0100 UTC 1/21/2016 – With multi call letter ID at TOH including 1070 WGOS High Point and 980 WULR with several “Cadena Radial Nueva Viva” slogans, over / under WAZY-SC during au cx.

980 WAZS Summerville, SC. – 0102 UTC 1/21/2016 – Heard mixing with WULR-SC with Spanish sounding rap or dance tune, ID came at 0102 UTC with multi call letters given for WAZS and 1480 WZJY during au cx.

990 WITZ Jasper, IN. – 1059 UTC 1/21/2016 – With Spanish accented English call letter ID given at TOH along with Jasper mention, very faint while mixing with an equally faint WGSO, during au cx.

1230 WHOP Hopkinsville, KY. – 0400 UTC 1/8/2016 – Poor with ID heard for // W237BV FM 95.3 and Hopkinsville mention.

1240 WHVN Charlotte, NC. – 0100 UTC 1/21/2016 – With faint multi call letter ID at TOH including one for WOLS-FM then into a religious program, during au cx.

1290 KUOA Siloam Springs, AR. – 0100 UTC 1/21/2016 – No calls heard but clear ad for Superior Ford in Siloam Springs, fair until lost to WHIO at TOH.

1340.050 WBIW Bedford, IN. – 1201 UTC 1/31/2016 – With clear ID popping up out of the GY noise with call letters and Bedford mention and soon lost again. Noticeably off-frequency measuring 1340.050

1380 WLRM Millington, TN. – 0102 UTC 1/21/2016 – With urban music, announcement with ID given at 0102 UTC: “….and the blues…W-L-R-M, Millington, Memphis. The all new 13-80, W-L-R-M”, during au cx.

1380 WAOK Athens, GA. – 2200 UTC 1/24/2016 – Very faint and way under dominant WHEW with OM giving call letters including those of WVEE, soon lost again.

1400 WINC Winchester, VA. – 0300 UTC 1/21/2016 – With ad string leading up to TOH with several call letter announcements mentioning Winchester, serving the area for 75 years, and then into FOX News, clear during ID and then lost to the GY noise during au cx.

1490 WKBV Richmond, IN. – 1259 UTC 1/13/2016 – With local weather forecast leading up to call letter ID read by the same announcer, dominant.

1520 WXYB Indian Rocks Beach, FL. – 0305 UTC 1/21/2015 – Faint but clear and mostly alone for a few minutes with Greek music parallel to a huge signal from 1500 WPSO during au cx.

1610 WNHC787 Mackinaw City, MI. – 0205 UTC 1/11/2016 – CHHA apparently off the air, or at least no sign of them here tonight. Instead, a brief fade-in of the Mackinac Bridge Authority TIS including mention of // 530 and calls given along with wind advisories.

Latin American:

620 XENK Guadalupe del Monte, Mexico – 0500 UTC 1/10/2016 – With rooster calls and “Radio Seis-Veinte” slogans and Spanish music and talk, calls given at 0600 TOH, over WTMJ at times.

1130 YVRL Macuto, Venezuela – 0100 UTC 1/21/2016- ID assisted by ReadDX with “Radio I-de-al” slogans during a radio station advertising ad including station telephone number and one mention of Macuto included, only lasting for 1-2 minutes and then lost to KWKH during au cx.

1170 XECD Puebla, Mexico – 0100 UTC 1/21/2016 – Faint while mixing with an UNID SS, with YL call sign given, “Double-U” mentions and partial “Oro” slogan, during au cx.

1280 WCMN Arecibo, Puerto Rico – 0100 UTC 1/21/2016 – With multi-call letter ID at TOH including WPRP & WORA and several “Noti Uno” jingles under a strong WANS (SC), au cx.

Trans-Atlantics:

1296.008 Sudan – 0322 UTC 1/28/2016 – Fair signal with steady audio during Qu’ran recitations lasting for several minutes. Thanks to Bjarne Mjelde for confirming frequency offset and comparing program content to what he had recorded during the same time as my reception. Carrier still hanging on at 0410 UTC but audio long gone.

1530 VOA Pinheira/Ponta Praião, São Tomé – 0258 UTC 1/27/2016 – With clear sign-on announcement beginning at 0258 UTC and Yankee Doodle Dandy interval signal under WCKY while phasing the North D-KAZ against a 60 FT N/S BOG wire to reduce WCKY as much as possible. VOA news partially heard beginning at 0300 UTC under WCKY also.
